NSD did an awesome job getting the product here without any damage. Shed is much bigger than I thought it would be. Took my wife and I about 6 hours to assemble. Its built to handle a good amount of weight just make sure your surface is level. Walls are a little flimsy but, for an outdoor storage option, I am happy with how it turned out. Doesn’t require alot of tools, Phillips #2 #3 and 2 11mm wrenches will do.
**1 Year Update 5/20/2024**: Still going strong! The shed still looks just like it did when we set it up. The addition of the L-brackets and sliding bolt lock in my original review appear to have prevented any warping that other reviewers complained about. The shed hasn’t discolored or faded at all (it gets full sun from sunrise til about 1pm) and has never leaked water. The cushions inside still look new and have been well protected from the elements in between use. Now I’m considering a second Rubbermaid shed to hold our grilling and extra gardening supplies!
We needed a cross between a very large deck box and a small shed to store our outdoor cushions in during rain or off-season. We have a *very large* concrete seat wall that uses an enormous amount of outdoor cushions – way more than a typical patio set. I read reviews both here on HoungLTD, and on several big box store websites, for different lean-tos, XL deck boxes, sheds, etc. Most have relatively high reviews, but it seems like all are plagued with complaints about durability or warping, or poor assembly instructions. In the end, we ordered this 5 x 2 Sandalwood Rubbermaid Shed because it fit the dimensions we needed. I read several previous reviewers comments about the roof warping and effecting the closure of doors, and we have mediated those concerns by both installing some small L-brackets to the front of the shed (not the doors but the small bit before the door hinge) and the roof, and we have also purchased a sliding bolt lock that a previous reviewer posted a photo of (ours not installed yet). I am hoping these two amendments will prevent the roof from warping and keep the shed in top condition.
We installed on a level crushed granite surface, on store-bought pavers. Install was quick and easy with two people – maybe 1.5 hrs tops, with the second person only helping stabilize a couple times. In my photo, you’ll see the shed easily fits 8 seat cushions (48 in L x 18 in D x 3 in H), 16 back cushions (20 in square) and 4 lumber cushions. We are actually getting a 9th seat cushion and believe that will fit also. We put a few pieces of wood at the bottom to keep the cushions off the ground, just in case of a high water (although this shouldn’t be necessary since its already raised on pavers). We didn’t see a lot of light inside when we stood in it closed, assembled, so we did not add any silicone to seal it. Our shed is housed somewhat by the roof overhang, but not completely.
I will update the review for durability after a full Summer season of cushion storage.
I put this shed together alone over the course of 3 weekends. If I didn’t have to haul the pieces from my driveway to the backyard I could have done it in 2. Total labor time on the shed itself was about 5.5 hours. Partially due to the location and having to move my ladder so much.
Definitely use dawn dish soap to help the pieces slide together and make sure your foundation is level! I used a rubber mallet to assist getting some panels together and that helped. Also, I recommend that you put the panels in the sun on a flat surface to make them straight as they were a little warped from shipping.
If you are assembling solo, a triangle ladder that you can sit on the top of is a must unless you are tall. I’m a 5’7 125lbs 50+ woman who is good at construction but balancing a few of the panels and hefting some of the roof had me cursing, especially on the 90 degree days. Definitely easier with a helper but, my pittie mix could only offered kisses!
Shed seems pretty sturdy and is a nice size. I like that it is plastic and recyclable. My old shed got termites from being near moist woods.
This shed has already weathered a pretty big rain and wind storm and no leaks.
I also like the skylight and door hardware adds a nice touch.
So far the floor has been easy to clean as well.
My recommendation is call a buddy to help and this can be a one day project.
I live in a condo with a large carport and only had a small outdoor closet to store garage/attic type stuff. I had been paying $120 per month for a 5×8 storage unit and was trying to find a way to use the extra space in my carport to eliminate that expense. I live in the PNW and did not want metal because of rust, so the resin units seemed to make the most sense (especially with the easier assembly).
I saved on delivery charges buying on houngLTD over Home Depot/Lowes, and the base price was about the same so happy about that! I was able to open the box (VERY large and too heavy to lift) at my front door and then move the individual pieces over to my carport for assembly. I put this together by myself in about 3 hours (mid-50s active and average size female). I am not going to say it was easy, but it wasn’t as difficult as some other furniture I have assembled. I was able to follow the instructions with no problem. I would recommend having a partner to help, as I probably could have built this in half the time if I had some help. But it is doable solo if that is the only option. The hardest part to do alone was getting the screws into the proper holes connecting the roof pieces to the walls because you need someone to push the roof piece down outside while someone else is inside screwing them together. I had to find something very heavy that wouldn’t slide off the roof piece to keep it pushed down (I used my beanbag weights in a duffel with a grippy rubber rug mat to keep it from sliding off).
My carport asphalt is mostly level so I did not need to build a foundation for it. It would probably be a good idea to do that regardless, but it will work building it on flat asphalt or concrete. I did have to move it slightly to make sure the floor was flat enough (otherwise the doors will not work right and the integrity of the wall joints will be compromised).
A few months later I am very happy with it, through many days of rain and some intense wind. I have enough heavy things inside to keep it from blowing away in the wind, and I have it installed on the edge of a covered area. It is mostly protected from the worst exposure issues outside and I do not have a problem with water leaks or being musty inside. I am storing things like Christmas decorations, camping equipment and other items in boxes made to protect from moisture and bugs, and I have a few toolboxes and extra wooden dining chairs in there. So far so good!
In 6 months thing thing will have paid for itself with what I am not paying for extra storage, and I am quite happy with it! I can also take it with me if I move. Overall very satisfied and I highly recommend for the type of situation I needed to deal with.
I built this on a Friday and Saturday after noon just my self and took a total of a bout 7-8 hours. Two people could get it done in much less time. I put mine on a stone base for about $260 in stone and it sits perfectly but any level base will do. The instructions with photos are easy to follow and anyone with a 7/16 wrench and a screw driver can build this. My recommendation to future buyers is to be mindful when hanging the door to make sure they are straight. Even once straight the only thing that could be a little better and the full closure of the doors. As shown in the video you have to pop it in to lock it into place. That is probably by design but I’d like to point this out. Other than that I love this.
